The Brotherhood of Saint Andrew is an international organization of men and boys in the Episcopal Church. It grew from a request by the Rector of St. James Cathedral in Chicago for a group of laymen to work with a drunken man who had appealed for help. One of the members of the group suggested that the men call themselves the Brotherhood of St. Andrew since, as St. Andrew, they were trying to reach out to a brother and to bring him to Christ. Its first meeting was held on St. Andrew’s Day, 1883 in a basement meeting room at St. James Cathedral in Chicago. One of their first projects was to place Bibles in rooming houses and hotels near St. James. This was 25 years before the Gideon Society began its work! By 1900 there were 15,000 chapters in 17 countries.
The only requirement for membership is to be a baptized Christian male at least 12 years of age. Our purpose is to bring men and boys to Christ to grow in faith through prayer, study, and service. The Richard Oliver Chapter, named for our founding director, previously met the first Saturday of the month following worship together in Morning Prayer. Since some members had difficulty meeting on Saturday, we are experimenting with meeting on the first Sunday morning of each month at 9:00 A.M.
